Art build tomorrow & election watch party/opening reception!

Tomorrow from 11am to 3pm at PNCA, we will host a community printmaking event open to those who want to create art for our 11th annual Reclaim MLK March in January!

We’re excited to partner with the faculty at PNCA to once again host a community centered art making event that will help us build solidarity ahead of our Reclaim MLK March in January. No experience necessary, we welcome artists and creatives of all ages, mediums and skill sets to work alongside talented artists and activists to create a work of art that highlights your statement. We will be using various mediums including screenprinting and block printing.

Art activities will happen from 11am to 3pm and we will break away for those who want to attend the panel portion of the event outside of the art making space from 1pm to 2pm.

1PM-2PM Move with Purpose: Wellness & Rights in Activism

In anticipation of the upcoming election season, it’s more important than ever to empower our communities with information to take care of one another. Don’t Shoot Portland will partner with Dr. Tee Mayfield, LPC-S to provide mental health support resources and trauma-informed services that focus on those who experience emotional trauma during uprisings due to racialized violence. Civil rights attorney Jesse Merrithew will also join us to educate the public about their legal rights, provide guidance on documenting incidents, and offer strategies for effective self-advocacy if they experience harm during a protest.

Reclaim MLK honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the fight for racial justice and human rights. This is an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and contribute to a collective effort that aims to bring about positive change in our community. This is a family-friendly event with all ages and experience levels welcomed.

Election Watch Party + Opening Reception on November 5, 2024  from 5-7pm

In anticipation of the upcoming election night coupled with the subsequent Inauguration Day, The BLACK Gallery presents a new exhibit, Room for Conversation, opening November 5th through January 20, 2025.

Room for Conversation features rare, one of a kind pieces from Don’t Shoot Portland/The BLACK Gallery collection including works by Kara Walker, Isaka Shamsud-Din, Julian Gaines, Faith Ringgold and Ernie Barnes.

This interactive exhibit kicks off with an election night watch party that includes an oral history recording booth that will allow visitors to document their feelings and reactions during this complicated yet monumental event. Room for Conversation welcomes groups and individuals to schedule time to be present within the art space while supporting the need for intersectional discussions and critical dialogue.

The BLACK Gallery curators are known for developing bystander intervention and anti racist programming for use in critical response work, advocacy and public education, and it’s these values that center and inform the spaces.

Room for Conversation is inspired by discussion rooms and lounges in social clubs where creatives would come together to discuss world views, politics and art. On November 5th while our nation awaits the results of a historic election that centers on race, gender and class in America, Room for Conversation intentionally provides Portlanders, and visitors to our city, a place to land.

Don’t Shoot Portland is holding an open art call for a community collection of works that pay homage to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.‘s Dream while addressing todays’ global fight for human rights & justice.

Reclaim MLK is a community focused event that supports our Children’s Art and Social Justice Council, a youth led movement for social change.

Submitted works will be processed into screen prints to be used as protest art during our annual March in January 2025, coinciding with Inauguration Day.

Persons of all ages are welcome to submit work with 5 winners under 21 years of age to be selected to encourage youth participation.

Submissions are open through November 30
