Resistance is Happening Now: Archiving the Black Lives Matter Movement at The BLACK Gallery

Resistance Is Happening Now: Archiving the Black Lives Matter Movement is up from August 1 through October 3. Visits are by appointment only and can be made at theblackgallerypdx.com Thursday through Sunday from 12 to 5pm.

The month of August has been known as Black August to civil rights activists since 1979, becoming a time to reflect and uplift Black liberation.

The BLACK Gallery powered by Don’t Shoot Portland presents Resistance Is Happening Now: Archiving the Black Lives Matter Movement, a showcase that honors the ongoing struggle for human rights by centering the solidarity and advocacy work of local organizers.

The exhibit features local protest photography spanning over a decade of Portland community action alongside evidential documents that illuminate the various and pervasive inequalities found within the structures and institutions of American society. Featured photographers are Kathryn Kendall and Bear Perry with archival research conducted by Taishona Carpenter and creative curation by Teressa Raiford.

Don’t Shoot Portlands’ commitment for preservation and resistance continues in this Liberated Archives series as we recognize that systemic discrimination is sustained by historical and social factors, requiring intentional efforts to identify and dismantle.
